If the U.S. took the billions of dollars it spends on its military,and put it into space travel research?

Do you think we could figure out a way to travel faster than the speed of light by now? do we have the technological capabilities to figure that out right now in 2011 IF we gave the research ample funding? or is that kind of technology way beyond us no matter how well we fund our space program?
