Is theism really just an excuse to ignore reality, hoping that there is something else out there?

There is ample evidence that proves all gods and goddesses are mythical characters created by ancient arrogant, ignorant, insecure, superstitious people. Are theists, in this day in age, really just using their irrational beliefs in God as a pacifier to ease their insecurities about their place in the vast universe we live in?
